WAIWHETU AFFAIRS

PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION

The quarterly general meeting of the Waiwhetu Progressive^ Association was held in St. Paul's Hall recently, Mr. W. J. Dredge presiding.

A reply from the Railway Department with reference to the late arrival at Wellington of the,7.25 a.m. train from Waterloo, was discussed and it was decided to ask the Railway Department to arrange for all trains to depart from the stations en route at the scheduled time, instead of waiting for late passengers. It was agreed that the Railway Department should also be asked to reconsider its refusal to accede to the association's request for a Sunday rail service or a rail-car service. It was decided to request the Borough Council to carry out the following improvements: —Pipe the drain which runs from Waikari Avenue to the little Awamutu Stream; tar-seal all street corners; and lift kerbing in Birdwood Road and .Trafalgar Street. The question of the footpath on the western side of Wainui Road was raised by Mr. J. Callaghan, and it was decided to request the council to tarseal the footpath and provide a stormwater channel round the front of Mr. Patrick's property. The quality and pressure of the gas were referred to by Mr. Callaghan, and it was decided to request the Gas Board to advise when the new plant would be put into operation. Objection to the statement in the Press by the chairman of the Gas Board in connection with the gas supply was :also voiced by members, who maintained that the loan proposal which the ratepayers had turned down about four years ago had been defeated on account of the board's proposing to purchase a plant which had not been tried out in actual working.
