THEFT OF COAL
Pleading guilty to the theft of 841b of coal, valued at 2s 6d, the property of McGowan and Magee, Harry Addley, a labourer, aged 19, appeared before Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. -' . . .
Detective-Sergeant P. Doyle, who prosecuted, said that for a considerable time past a large quantity of coal had been stolen from the firm's yards in (Waterloo Quay, and the matter was i brought under the notice of the police. Last night, at about 7.30;, Detective Alty was at the yards,, and the accused arrived on a bicycle with a carrier, bag, and coal shovel. He went to a bin in the yard, and shovelled 841b of coal into the bag. When the detective spoke to him he said he came for the purpose of taking coal, but denied being responsible for previous thefts. It was difficult to know what to do with the accused, who was an epileptic.
Addley was convicted and fined 10s, in default seven days' imprisonment.
