HORTICULTURE INSTITUTE
At the recent meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, Mr. F. S. Pope presided, and the following members were present: —Mrs. Knox Gilmer, Messrs. Campbell, Dallas, Hyde, Poole, and G. S. Nicoll, Dominion secretary. Apologies were received from Dr. H. H. Allan, Messrs. T. Waugh, T. Horton, J. G. MacKenzie, and F. J. Shanks. It was reported that sympathy in the loss sustained by the New Zealand Forestry League, through the death of its late secretary, Mr. E. C. Jack, had been conveyed. Congratulations conveyed to Mr. J. W. Mawson, Internal Affairs Department, on his election as a Fellow of the Institute of Landscape Architects, were also noted, and it was decidecf ( &> forward congratulations to Mr. W&S. La Trode, until recently a member of the examining board, on his honour of C.B.E. Mrs. Knox Gilmer reported further action taken with regard to an Empire exhibition of plants at the Centennial Exhibition. Appreciation was , expressed upon receipt of £21 15s lOd, one-third share of the net profit from the national flower show, Christchurch, 1938. Its Canterbury district council will receive. one-third. . share of the institute's share. A progress report from the president of the Taranaki district council regarding National Horticultural Week, New Plymouth, 1939, was noted with appreciation, also the offer of a generous donation of 110 guineas from Messrs. F. Cooper, Ltd., Wellington, to be held in trust for the annual purchase of a trophy, at the National Flower Show. Appointments were announced of G. H. Huthnance from "Maranui," New Plymouth, to first assistant at PukeMira Park and Brooklands, and E. W. Campbell from reserves department, Invercargill, to London County Council parks department. Both are candidates for the diploma examination, and have been congratulated on their appointments. The appointment of Mr. L. W. Delph as hon. secretary was noted, also the presentation of the Cockayne Gold Medal at the district council's meeting on June 13. Activities in Southland, viz., recommendation of institute's qualifications in respect of garden trainees' appointments, broadcast of garden sessions and lectures, were noted with satisfaction. At the close of the meeting, all members present attended a function and presentation to Mf. T. Waugh, arranged by the Wellington Horticultural Society.
