DE LUXE THEATRE.
Double-Feature Programme.
She is the power behind the throne. It sounds complicated, but that is the role played by Anna May Wing, the sophisticated Oriental actress, in "The Secret of Lan Ying," the Paramount drama of a political monarch who is ruined when he tries to trade his blackjack for a silk hat. It comes to the De Luxe Theatre tomorrow. Miss Wong, most recently seen as the secret agent in "Daughter of Shanghai,'1 plays the part of Akim Tamiroff's friend and adviser in this story of the inside workings of a boss-ruled community. When Tamiroff casts her aside like an old shoe in order to leave himself free to pursue a beautiful girl of the country club set, Miss Wong turns the tables on him and ultimately brings about his ruin. Her role in "The Secret of Lan Ying" is the type which has put Miss Wong in the front rank of Oriental players. Serene and almost unnoticed, she moves behind the scenes, guarding the destinies of the most powerful figure in the community and finally destroying him when she feels that his career of plunder and murder has gone too far. In addition to Miss Wong and Tamiroff, who won applause for his performances as the general in "The General Died at Dawn" and Lafitte's right-hand man in Cecil B. De Mille's "The Buccaneer," the cast includes more than a dozen other experienced film players. Chief among them are Lloyd Nolan, the bad man of "Wells Fargo," Gail Patrick, Harvey Stephens, Anthony Quinn, and Rosco.e Karns. The second , feature will be "Prescription for Romanae," a riotous' comedy, with Mischa Aver, Wendie Barrie, and Kent Taylor.
