' It is confirmed in London thai France has occupied the Paracet Islands, south-east of, Hainan Island and within easy flying distance o£ Indo-China. ' They are a series of reefs and lagoons suitable for a seaplane base. They are not permanently settled' and therefore it is in the interests of. France that they shall not fall intaf the hands of another Power. France has notified Britain of theoccupetion. * The Domei news agency report* that Japan lacks official notification; of the occupation of the Paracel Islands and is watching with coil-; cern. She may make representations to France *on the grounds that tho islands belong to China. ; The landing was carried out by* force of Annamite police. The, islands have been used as a base by t twenty Japanese seaweed gatherers..,, The Tokio correspondent of th«. "Daily Telegraph" says the Press de-\ Clares that the French occupation o£ the Paracel Islands is illegal as itviolates Chinese sovereignty and integrity, but there is nevertheless an apprehensive note.
