PROBLEM WELL SOLVED

There is a difficulty that a trainer may have with his team that is often not fully appreciated, and this is placing a number of horses of the same grade for wins. A trainer always desires to Win races for each of his patrons, and he has to do some hard thinking at times when he has several patrons with horses of like calibre.

Such a difficulty confronted the Trentham trainer H. B. Lorigan at the beginning of the present season, when he had five two-year-olds in work, none promising to be more than useful as juveniles. The problem was eased a little when it was deemed, advisable to put (Baralong—Circus Star) aside. With the other four Lorigan won one race apiece. The first to succeed was the Defoe— Lyrical filly Lady Lyric, who won at Tauherenikau at the New Year in the colours of her "breeder, Mr. C. Cunningham.. The next winner was Twenty Grand, an Australian-bred colt by Koomeela, who scored at Pahiatua for Mr. J. Fearon. Then White Lady, another Australian-bred filly, by Tippler, was produced at Carterton to win first up. Finally Lorigan secured a victory with Diareus, a gelding by Arausio, at Otaki, Diareus carrying his own colours but being raced in a partnership. Lorigan thus served all his patrons before placing the youngster in whom he holds an interest himself for a win.
