THE WINTER MEETING

WELCOME CHANGE IN THE

WEATHER

(By "Binocular.")

With a happy break in the weather yesterday, the Wellington Racing Club*s Winter Meeting was opened at Trentham today under much better conditions than were promised. The morning was sunny and mild, .and though clouds rolled up mid- ;■'•. forenoon, they were not such as to mar the prospects of a much . more enjoyable day's sport than was generally anticipated. By the time of the first race there was a large attendance on the course. The change in the.weather came too late to firm up the track, which yesterday was in a sodden state> and, though it had dried up somewhat during the' preceding 24 hours, it was still very soft and soon cut up. It was typical winter going at Trentham, and very little rain- at any time during this weed's racing would soon have it slushy. -..■'". . The customary comprehensive facilities were available for the comfort and i convenience of patrons. As usual, / running comment, on the races was broadcast on the course. The betting was under the win-and-place system. The following were the results, with notes on the form up till time of going to press:— MARIRI HACK AND HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE, £300; about 2£ miles. I—l—J. H. Grigg's. b g Flashlight, by Shambles—Snapshot, aged, 10.11 (R; Register) ............ 1 2—2— W. Wilson's bg Kahunoke, by Cynic—High Degree, aged, 10.3 .- ( (A. E. Gilmer), 6-6-Acron 9;0 (I. Rohloff), 7-7 Monteloo car. 9.2J (J. F. Fergus). Time, smin 42fsec. (Winner trained by T. H. Gillett, Riccarton.) Flashlight was backed very confidently in the Mariri Hack Steeples, in which Primak, Royal Romance, and , Nightbound were withdrawn. Although the record of the favourites in this event Is by no means good, the southerner fulfilled the expectations of backers by winning very comfortably from Kahunoke, who ran an honest race. The winner did not fence particularly well, but he had the measure of his opponents throughout, and his success gave him his third win over fences. Monteloo went to the front to show the way in the early stages, but came to grief -at the sod wall, interfering with Flashlight and Monastic; The latter, refused at the brush further along the back, and although his rider perservered "with him the delay placed the Poinbal gelding right out of the race. On the-final circuit Kahunoke set out after Flashlight, the pair being well clear of Chile, who hadamoved up past Acron. In the run home the favourite held his advantage to win •by six lengths from Kahunoke/ the latter .being ..eight lengths clear ;of ' •— Acron. was- another" fifteen lengths further back." Handicap, and backers. went for Second Innings, Lady Leigh, and Reasonable. However, the favoured trio failed to gain: a place, although' Lady Leigh got up to fill fourth position. Earl's Court swung round at the start, otherwise the field went away in good line, Reasonable dashing to the front io lead Great Pal, Jan Ridd, and Gay Hunting to the turn. As they straightened up for home, Jan Ridd and Great Pal ran past the leader from Gay Hunting, Fairy Dale, Sly Fox, Advance Plane, and Lady Leighi Inside the distance Great Pal assumed command, and, hard-ridden, drew away to win by four lengths from Jan Ridd, who was also littlefancied, with Advance Plane finishing on in third place a length and a half back. Lady Leigh was a good fourth, and "then came Gay Hunting, Second Innings, Potent, and Sing Lee. VITTORIA HURDLES, £300; 1£ miles. fc—2—E. N. (Winner trained by A. E. Didham, ~■'-■■ Wingatui.) Although only a recruit to the jumping branch, Valarth was installed favourite for the Vittoria Hurdles, and the judgment proved to be sound, for the southerner, who is a. proved mudlark, was always one oif the leading • contingent. He fenced beautifully, and this enabled him to take charge two fences from home to beat Black Man, who showed considerable improvement upon his Marton form. There was a great finish for the minor placing, Contract narrowly failing to j overhaul Chaste. Valarth and Black Man were in the van> passing through the straight, Sunder ■having fallen at the first obstacle, but Taumau ran forward to .join, \

Valarth, and Curie also improved his! position to lead Tail Light and Entheos. The positions underwent little change going along the back, but Tail Light rapped one fence hard and nearly unshipped his jockey. Curie joined Valarth as they turned for home, but the southerner outjumped him, and at the final fence he was showing the way to Black Man, Curie, Chaste, and Tail Light. Valarth held Lis position in thej run home to beat Black Man by four lengths, with Chaste a head away. Then came the fast-finishing Contract, with Curie doing best of the others. JOCKEY INJURED. When Sunder fell at the first fence in the Vittoria Hurdles his rider, L. Dulieu, suffered a fracture of the base of the skull, and he was removed to hospital in a serious condition., STEWARDS' HANDICAP, £400; 6 . furlongs. B—B—T. Fisher's : and T. R. Glading), 11-13 Collodion 8.0 (C. P. Shield), 19-19 Sweet Rose 8.0 (C. T. Wilson). Time, lmin 21fsec. (Winner trained by T. R. George, Trentham.) The northerners, Maori Song, Hunting Song, and Farland, were in most demand for the Stewards' Handicap, but the eventual winner, Matoru, came from the local stable of T. R. George. The winner followed up his success at Marton on Saturday with a wellmerited victory. Prince Acre made a bold bid to head him off, but Matoru finished a shade too' welL Great Hope and Hunting Blood appeared to be the smartest to begin, although Gaily from an outside position was also prominent. Then in the leading division were Rebel Mate, Maori Song, Merial, and Matoru, the lastnamed being on the rails. As they swept into the straight Greftt Hope was piloting Gaily, Rebel Mate, Matoru, Merial, Prince Acre, and Essex, but the leader weakened inside the distance, and Prince Acre then took charge only to be immediately challenged by Matoru. In a fighting finish Matoru finished a shade the better to win by half a head from Prince, Acre, with Merial a length away. Gaily was fourth with Great Hope, Rebel Mate, Debham, and Essex next to finish. WELLINGTON STEEPLECHASE, £1000; about Z\ miles. 7_7_j. H. (Winner trained by iOwner,. Rotorua.) With the exception of Kahunoke, who competed earlier, all'the acceptors' went to the post* in the Wellington Steeplechase. The northerner Bryce Street was. the..favourite, but he was unlucky enough to.fall over Brigadore when the latter fell at the sod wall. He was going quite well at the time. All Irish, who was fencing brilliantly, jumped his way to the front, and had a commanding lead.in the early stages. However, on the final round both Erination and Santoft closed up, the former drawing away after negotiating the final brush to win by eight lengths from last' year's winner, Santoft, with All Irish five lengths away third. Clarion Call came into the picture in the final half-mile to take fourth place. Red Sun refused at the second of the brush double, and Manawatu, was pulled up at the last fence. Only the first four horses finished. ,
