ANNUAL ATTEMPTS
CLIMBING OF EVEREST
FAVOURED BY EXPEDITION
LEADER
(Received July 4, 2 p.m.)
LONDON, July 3
"A succession of yeai-Iy expeditions to Mount Everest is wanted," writes Mr. H. W. Tilman, leader of the present expedition, in a copyright letter to "The Times" from the Rongbuk base camp. .
Summing up the results, he points out that seemingly there was no lull in 1938 between the winter winds and the first heavy snowfall, owing to the early monsoon, while last year, they were told, the situation was exceptionally favourable. Moreover, in 1935 the mountain was climbable until the end of June. "I believe that probably a smaller party than the present one should come out every May," he states. "A favourable season will occur sooner or later, and we have mountaineers capable of taking advantage of it."
