TROUBLE IN NORTH

LIGHTNING THE CAUSE

(By Telegraph—Press Association. 1

AUCKLAND, July 3

Lightning storms in Taranaki this afternoon were responsible for a breakdown in the 110,000-volt transmission line between Arapuni and Stratford, two slight interruptions in the Auckland lighting circuit and a 20-minute dislocation of the tramway system in the city and suburbs. Broadcasting services stopped for five minutes, once at 2.17 p.m. for three minutes, and again at 3.36 p.m. for two and a half minutes.

Inquiries made at Hamilton showed that lightning which struck the hightension lines between Arapuni and Stratford caused a surge that placed the circuit out of commission. It interfered momentarily with the equipment at the Penrose sub-station and resulted in the shutting-down of the direct-current generators at the King's Wharf sub-station, which supplies electric power for the tramway system and industrial load in the city.
