SWATOW SHELLED
JAPANESE WARSHIPS
INHABITANTS FLEEING
SHANGHAI, July 2
Japanese warships began shelling the city of Swatow, on the coast between Canton and Tmoy, today, and thousands of the inhabitants are fleeing to safety. This follows the bombing of the town yesterday by scores of Japanese planes, 400 persons being killed.
Japanese motor-boats penetrated the boom at Matang on the Yangtze River. The Chinese have laid another at Hukow^ 20 miles below Kiukiang, but the floods are minimising its effectiveness and at the same time retarding the Japanese attempts to travel upstream.
