DAKWOOD'S HURDLES

MELBOURNE, July 3. A rare finish was provided in the Grand National Hurdles, run at the V.R.C. -Meeting yesterday, Dakwood prevailing by the narrowest of margins. ~' . Result:-— GRAND NATIONAL HURDLES, £2000; 3 miles. - H. and M. Bourke's eh g Dakwood, by Backwood—Eaton Blue, 7yrs, 10.3 (Douglas) 1 Wallace Drake, 9.4 (McKee) ...... 2 Giant Killer, 9.2 (Dummett) 3 Frisco was scratched. Heroic Chief made the early pace, but Giant Killer led over the last fence. Dakwood then raced to the front, and although hotly [Challenged by Wallace Drake, won by half a head. Giant Killer was a length and a half away third. Pooley Bridge looked like gaining a place approaching the straight, but faded away. Whernside was always in the bunch. Time, smin 50|sec.
A protest against Dakwood for alleged interference was dismissed.
