TRENTHAM WORK

ERINATION IN DISGRACE

(By "Rangatira.")

After further rain the tracks at Trentham this morning were in a deplorable state, probably the worst they have been on the day before a meeting in the last decade. Very little serious galloping was attempted, but most of the horses engaged at the me ting are on the scene and they were out doing serviceable work. It will be a strenuous week for them on the going that now prevails. The course proper is sodden, and the first horses to gallop on it will plough it up.

One horse who handled the ground well was Hunting BloQd, who came down from the three furlongs in 39sec. His trainer states that his gallop on Saturday with Alunga was all wrong, as he rarely lets a horse beat him on the tracks.

Alunga was lame after his gallop on Saturday, Taut he appeared all right again this morning.

De Friend and Golden Blonde ran the best half-mile timed in 54sec. Very few horses, however, worried about figures. Half-miles or last half-miles in about a minute were the general order.

Erination (R. Register) was again in disgrace. Prior to going out to school with three other horses over the permanent fences he was taken to the brush on the inside of the course and dropped his rider, bridle and all coming off. Later he came down on all four legs together after jumping the sod wall, scrambled over a boards, striking his gaskin, and then refused to jump the next fence. He was not persevered with. On his schooling prior to the meeting he has lost most of his admirers, and he will have to do a lot better to complete the Wellington steeplechase country.

Smiling Thru (J. F. Fergus) also blundered in her. school. At the second of the boards she screwed and lost her rider on landing. When she was recaptured she completed the five fences without further incident.

The only school in company over the country was that in which Manawatu (B. Kowhai),. Power Chief (A. McDonald), and Monteloo (J. F. Fergus), accompanied by Erination, set out to negotiate the five permanent fences along the back. Erination's showirfg has already been recorded. The others left him, and for the last two fences Manawatu and Power Chief drew out together. The Awapuni pair, gave a sound exhibition. Manawatu looks lighter than expected after his lengthy absence prior to his race at Marton on Saturday.

Kinkle was schooled over the five fences yesterday morning, and accomplished his task satisfactorily.

There was little schooling over the hurdles. Taumau (B. Kowhai) jumped four fences smoothly, and Chaste (J. McCauley) and Contract (J. Bromley) also went over four hurdles, each jumping well, with Chaste in front for the last fence. :

Jan Ridd (A. Gilmer) twice refused t6 jump the pony hurdle, running off each time, but he then went' over three of the other fences, safely without impressing. He claims an engagement over hurdles on the final day.

Monastic and Flashlight both looked well when out doing a mile of pacing with Settlement. Monastic is quite sound, his absence from racing having been due to a mishap about twelve months ago. Chile was also on the track and appeared to be in good order.

It is now probable that Kahunoke will be a starter in the hack steeples in preference to the open event, and he will be ridden by A. E. Lord, who will also be on his old mount, John Charles, in the hurdles, leaving R. Beale to ride Charade.

Among horses on the scene for the second day's racing were Settlement, Flood Tide, Morning" Flight, Iddo, Philemup, and Chat. The only scratchings announce J. up till noon today were Royal Romance and Nightbound for the Mariri Steeples.
