ISSUE BEFORE PEOPLE
The Leader of the Opposition had tried to obtain a. tactical advantage by enlarging on the bogy of Socialism, but the issue before the people today was one of philosophy, said Mr. W. J. Lyon (Government, Waitemata). It was a question of comparing the record of the past Government and that of the present Government from the social and humanitarian viewpoint. Mr. Hamilton had been, credited with saying that the Prime Minister was too human.
Mr. Hamilton: I did not say that. Mr. Lyon: The Leader of the Opposition does not say it but he suggests
it. What was democracy after all but rule by the people? asked Mr. Lyon. Could the Opposition say seriously that during its term of office there had not been a financial oligarchy?
Mr. Poison: We have a dictatorship now.
I Mr. Lyon: Yes, we certainly have a t dictatorship, but it is a democratic dici tatorship, a.dictatorship of the mass of] the people in the community. ' j He submitted that the obvious mii ference to be taken from. Mr. Endean's [comments on the cost, of the social security scheme was that his party believed that social services should be curtailed. Was Mr. Endean speaking with the authority of his party in making such statements? ! .(Proceeding.)
