SPORTS FACILITIES
FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE
REQUESTS TO GOVERNMENT
[ Requests from many parts of the [Dominion have been received by the | Government from sports bodies seeking financial aid, under, the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act, towards the acquisition of new playing areas, or for the improvement of grounds already allocated or acquired for sport ; and recreation. The Minister of Internal Affairs (the Hon.- W. E. Parry) said today that the applications were being listed and would be considered by the National Council appointed under the Act when the organisation, was fully functioning.
"Big and little clubs fostering lootball, athletics, tennis, baseball, croquet, etc., and games for children, are all in bright and early with their requests for grounds and equipment," said Mr. Parry. "All will be fairly and fully considered when the survey is made."
There was occasionally among the letters received a fine example of selfhelp shown by the people of a district in the formation of their, own playing areas. "I have before me now," Mr. I Parry added, "a letter from the Domain Board, Waikiwi, Southland, showing the work, the women folk of that district did to lay down a croquet court. They had levelled for their court a piece of difficult ground- 70 yards by 60 yards, and in the process four feet of earth had to be taken from one side to build up the other side of the area. Now these ladies were planning to build themselves a pavilion. Spirit and enterprise are not lacking in the I women of Waikiwi."
