OBITUARY
MR. B. A. MOORE
The death of Mr. Bertrand Ambrose Moore, who was well known and respected in banking circles throughout the Dominion, occurred in Wellington today. At the time of his death Mr. Moore was in his sixty-second year, forty-three of which had been spent in the service of the Bank of New Zealand, of which he was Wellington manager. Mr. Moore joined the Nelson stall of the bank on April 5, 1895, and served there until he was transferred to the head office in Wellington in March, 1898. In August of the following year he commenced duties at the Blenheim branch, where he remained until November, 1910. He was appointed to the Wanganui branch as accountant in that month, and served there until April, 1912, when he was transferred to Gisborne in a similar capacity.
Six months later, Mr. Moore returned to the head office as assistant accountant. He remained here a year, ai
November, 1919, he was transferred to the relieving staff for about ten months, and following that came his first appointment as branch manager. From September, 1920, to January, 1028, he managed the Blenheim office. Following this, he-was promoted to the position of sub-inspector attached to the head office. In October; 1932, he succeeded Mr. D. F. Reid as manager of the Wellington branch, which position he held Until his death.
Mr. Moore was joint author with Mr. J. S. Barton, C.M.G., of the standard work "Banking in New Zealand" (1935), the first book of its kind to be published dealing with the historical side of Dominion banking. It is also an authoritative text-book on banking subjects.
Mr. Moore was very well versed in banking law and practice, and had given lectures on the subject at different times. He was a qualified accountant by examination. At the time of his death he was chairman of the Wellington branch of the Navy League.
He leaves a widow, two daughters, and one son Keith, who is a member of the staff of the North End branch of the bank.
The late Mr. Moore was chairman of the Wellington branch of the Navy League.
MR. ALEXANDER W. BETHUNE
The death occurred at Wellington on Wednesday of Mr. Alexander William Bethune, aged 81 years.
The late Mr. Bethune was born in Invercargill in 1857, his father being the Rev. Alexander Bethune, first minister of the Presbyterian Church in Southland. Mr. Bethune served his apprenticeship to the engineering profession with Mr. Jabez Hay, of Invercargill. He completed his apprenticeship in 1878 and in 1885 joined the Government steamer Hinemoa as third engineer, serving successively as third, second,' and chief engineer on the Hinemoa and the sister Government ship, Stella, until 1896 when he was appointed chief and guarantee engineer of the Tutanekai, then building, at Glasgow.
[ He remained as chief engineer, of the Tutanekai until 1900 "when he was appointed Inspector of Machinery, Surveyor of Ships, and Examiner ,of Engineers to the New Zealand Government. He acted in that capacity at Donedin, Invercargill, and Christchurch until he retired from the service in 1918.
Since his. retirement Mr. Bethune had travelled extensively in many parts of the world. His hobbies were fishing and bowling, and several museums have benefited by donations he made to them of birds' eggs collected by him during his period of employment on Government steamers. He was a member of the Kelburn Bowling CJlub.
The late Mr. Bethune was unmarried and is survived by one sister, Mrs. F. J. Cato, of Melbourne.
