"ROBIN HYDE" SAFE

ARRIVAL AT TSINGTAO

The .many friends of Miss Iris Wilkinson ("Robin Hyde"), of Northland, Wellington, who 'was reported recently as missing in China) is now reported as safe. Her father, Mr. G. E. Wilkinson, has been advised by the Internal Affairs Department that a cable message has beeh received from the ; British Consul-General at Shanghai stating that Miss Wilkinson has arrived safely at Tsingtao, having got safely through from Suchow, and will proceed to Shanghai tomorrow.

A cable message received on May 28 stated thkt the Japanese authorities were searching for the New Zealand journalist, Miss Iris Wilkinson ("Robin Hyde"), who departed on donkey-back from Suchow to the north-eastern front, which was then overrun by Japanese troops retreating from Langfeng. It was stated that she might possibly have taken refuge with missionaries who determined to remain in Suchow to safeguard Chinese refugees.

Iv. Miss Iris Wilkinson, who, perhaps, is | belter known as "Hobin Hyde," authoress of poems, articles, and novels, left New Zealand in January with the indention of proceeding via Shanghai, Kobe, Vladivostok, and the TransSiberian railway to Hussia, and thence to England, but her itinerary has been interrupted by a lengthening of her sojourn in China, where she is engaged in journalistic work. Her family last heard from her in a letter dated April 2 from Canton. In it she stated that she was staying with Dr. and Mrs, Fortune, the latter being iformerly Miss Eileen Pope, of Northland. She intended to go from Canton to Hankow and then as far as she could towards the war zone, writing for the magazines "Asia" and the "Far Eastern Mirror," and, it is believed, i for the "Manchester Guardian." That, however, was to occupy only a month, after which she intended to resume her trip to England, where she wished to arrive before the end of the summer. Except for trips to Australia, Miss Wilkinson has never previously been, overseas.
