FEEBLE BATTING

DERBY MEET AUSTRALIA ANOTHER CENTURY TO BROWN BARNES'S FIRST GAME United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received June 30, 11.10 a.m.) LONDON, June 29. Another century by Brown, who was unbeaten at stumps enabled Australia to secure a first innings lead for the loss of only one wicket when the cricket match against Derbyshire was commenced at Chesterfield today. Derbyshire won the toss and batted first for a score of 151. At stumps Australia had made 191 for. one wicket.

Barnes, whose wrist was injured on the way to England, took the field for the first time on the tour.

The wicket was slow after over- ( night rain. It was a windy and gloomy day, and the Australians shivered on ( taking the field. , ; Barnett kept wickets, the selectors apparently feeling that it was "wide- j sirable yet , to risk Barnes's wrist in ( that position. The teams, are: Derbyshire. — Buckstone, Elliott, i Alderman, Smith, Worthington, L. F. ; Townsend, G. H. Pope, A. V; Pope, Rhodes, Mitchell, and Copson. Australia.—Badcock, Brown, Fingleton, O'Reilly, White, Ward, Hassett, i McCabe, Barnett, Barnes, and Waite. McCormick is twelfth man. Although,Waite and McCabe got not i the slightest assistance from,, a dead i wicket, Waite soon had two victims ' in Smith an<T Aldbrmari ditring a ( dreary half-hour. After tw« maidens : Ward dismissed Leslie Townsend, who , had been batting astonishingly slowly, i Worthington. was sounder and more enterprising, though he and George < Pope were most cautious against Ward. One run was scored in five overs. * TEMPORARY RECOVERY. Derbyshire, after having three wickets down for 24, were showing signs of making a recovery when a beautiful ball from O'Reilly lifted G. Popes off-bail. The total was then four for 71 and after that wickets fell at regular intervals. The score at lunch was 103 for six wickets.- • Worthington played •=. a fighting innings which lasted, 135 minutes. He hit nine 4's. He set an example in soundness and the use oi the which none of- the others followed. Ward, flighting the ball in the strong wind, baffled the batsmen, and the county were out after 165 minues. It was a feeble display against bowling which was no more than ordinarily gOOd. r-< * Australia opened at 3.10 p.m. to the bowling of Copson, reputedly one of the most dangerous bowlers fti England, and Alfred Pope, who is 6ft 4in tall and is a medium-fast , bowler. Brown and Fingleton made only 13 runs ,in the first half-hour against accurate bowling. Fingleton,'after a tedious display, lost his middle stump, and Badcock was badly .beaten by Mitchell's next ball but an appeal for leg-before was unsuccessful. Brown and Badcock then scored - all round the wicket and maintained , a >good scoring rate, until sturrms. Brown, reached his century in 180 minutes. He gave chances at 7 and 50; Badcock had been batting 115 minutes at stumps. S' Details:— DERBYSHIRE.)
