THE CHANGED SCENE
(To the Editor.) I Sir,—On reading in your issue of [June 23 a small paragraph entitled I "Question and Comment," I, an old identity (native-born) felt impelled to write a few lines in. regard to Mr. Savage's comment: "Who is Mr. Mazengarb in any case?" The answer is simple: Mr. Mazengarb, like . Mr. Savage, is a respected citizen of, I hope and trust, a free, and democratic country, with freedom of speech and no legislation to muzzle the Press. I do not know a single member of the National Party or Mr. Mazengarb personally. The question was super- 1 fluous, as Mr, Mazengarb must be well and truly known to the Government party by now, and some pin-pricks must have penetrated very thin skm. Well, well; the scene has changed, for I remember, and so will the public, some vitriolic thrusts through the columns of the Press at Messrs. Forbes and Coates when they were steering New Zealand through the "doldrums," which is a very different proposition from a "full sail breeze." I have done a small bit for my country, and I sincerely hope young New Zealanders will wake up and see to it that their great inheritance lives on as the home of freedom for democracy, and that there is no stifling of hope, initiative, aspiration, and ambition, so that our young people can still carve out a career according to their ability in their own lovely country.—l am, etc., OLD IDENTITY. On the same subject, G. H. Wilkin writes:—"Mr. Mazengarb is very forward at asking questions, but rather backward in answering them himself. He made some remarks about Newfoundland as a horrid example to New Zealand under certain conditions. These Remarks were reported at length in 'The Post' a few weeks ago. Questions were asked him through the correspondence columns, and he either could not or would not answer them."
