.The following letter has been received by tjie Far.,.®asi : JGtelief Committee of the Joint Council of -the Ordei* 6f St. John and/tji£?New Zealand Red, Cross Society from Dr. James Maxwell, secretary of the International Red Cross Committee, Hankow:
'•We have again to. thank you for your very generous donation of £2000, the receipt for which has already been posted to'you. The position in Central China is a very complicated one. Dr. Grey is still at Ghengchow, and it seems to us that he is likely to be caught by the advancing tide of battle. Probably he will be able to get out later by Tientsin and come, around to us again via Hong Kong, if he so desires. Dr. Tremewan expects to be going to Ichang to the west of Hani kow, where work is very, heavy, in the : course of the next few days.
"Thank you very much for > the details, about the work you are doing in New Zealand. I need hardly say that'the needs in China are constantly increasing, and the very serious problem of the refugees is having now to be faced, so any further help which in their generosity your association is able to give would be very gratefully received.",
The letter is dated June 8. A letter dated June 7/ received from Dr. Tremewan, states:—
"I am at present. superintending a 100-bed hospital at Hankow on behalf of the British Unit Of the League of Nations. It is the first and only disease hospital' here, and we only take refugees. The hospital is affiliated with the International Red Cross Committee. •' , ' > , % "I will be leaving Hankow any day now for Canton, because they need help after continuous bombing attacks. If Ido not go to Canton I am proceeding to Ichang, which is at the present time the chief refugee centre and is one of the largest unbombed towns in China."
