RUGBY FOOTBALL

WELLINGTON UNION

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

MEETS

The management committee of the Wellington Rugby Union last night granted the Wellington Referees' Association permission to play its annual

match against the Auckland Referees' Association on Saturday, September 10. The association's request to play the match as the early game at Athletic Park on that day was held over in the meantime. The Wellington v. Wairarapa representative match will be played in the Wairarapa on July 20. The New Zealand Union asked the committee to submit the names of five referees who will be eligible and available to referee representative matches this season. Official notification was received from the New Zealand body of the selection of J. L. Griffiths, E. Tindill, and A. Lamboum for the tour of Australia. The team will leave Wellington on the Wanganella on July 7. The fifth grade match between Plimmerton and Wellington College Old Boys, on May 14, was awarded to Old Boys owing to Plimmerton having

played two over-age players.

The Wellington Club notified the clearance of R. Ward from the Marist Club, Invercargill.

The Amalgamated Brick and Pipe Company was granted permission to play a match between the company's two factories, on Saturday morning. The Marlborough Rugby union asked the committee to arrange a match between the Wellington colts' team and Marlborough, at Blenheim. The committee will endeavour to arrange the match. A letter was received from the Petone Club stating that its senior B team had drawn a bye next Saturday. "In this connection," the letter states, "we would point out that this team had a bye on June 18, and prior to that, no match on June 11, on account of the inter-island game. The position as it stands at present is that the team plays one game in a period of four weeks and this is viewed with concern not only by the committee but also by the players. We are afraid that our players will either drift from the game or lose interest unless some rearrangement is made."

The letter was received. Application for reinstatement was made by D. F. Thompson.

It was decided to accept a further entry from University in the third, third division. It will replace the Technical College Old Boys' team which has been withdrawn.

The following suggestions of the junior advisory committee regarding regrading were agreed to: —

Junior, first division: Poneke and Johnsonville will meet in the first round on Saturday. Poneke and Johnsonville will be transferred to the second division at the beginning (on July 9) of the second round of that division, and teams that missed matches with them in the first round of the first division will be credited with wins. As the first round of the first division will not be completed until July 16, two teams in the first division Will have to be given byes on July 9 and July 16, and they will be given friendly matches on those days.

No regradings will be necessary in the junior, second and third divisions; or the third, first and second divisions.

Third, third division: The position of teams in this division is being carefully watched, and if the committee considers any team or teams should be regraded, a report and recommendation will be submitted at the close of the first round.

In the fourth, first and second divisions, no regradings are required. Fifth, first and second divisions: Miramar and Onslow are too weak for the first division, and probably both teams would have to be withdrawn if they remained in the first division. Both these teams will be transferred to the second division, and Wellington and Petone B will be promoted from the second to the first division; these alterations will be made on Saturday, which marks the beginning of the second round in both divisions. The usual points procedure will be adopted with regraded teams. FIXTURES. Following are senior A first division games on July 9:—Poneke v. Johnsonville; Petone v. Marist; Hutt v. St. Patrick's College Old Boys, Athletic v. Eastbourne; Wellington v. Wellington College Old Boys. Grounds are to be arranged. The senior A second division, and senior B grades will meet in a trial match. /
