QUADROON'S EFFORT
SELKIRK'S SMART FIVE (Special to the "Evening Post.") PALMERSTON N., This Day. The weather was fine and cold for track work at Awapuni yesterday, and (he sky was overcast with rain not far away. The course proper was open, ?nd the horses were galloped next the rails, the going being good. The programme was interesting lor the centre is well represented at Marton and also at Irentham. The best efforts of the morning were credited to Quadroon and Bluffer. Prediction was given a work-out over seven furlongs, running the last two in 26sec. Cuddler was allotted a similar task and, after going easily to the home stretch, the last two furlongs were covered in 27sec. Great Hope sprinted five furlongs in lmin 7sec after taking 41 l-ssec for the first three.
Tailoa was going easily in front of Strolling and Fine Gold at the end of half a mile run in 56sec. Great Legion jumped away smartly from the threefur.'onp disc, but the saddle slipped forward before he had gone a furlong and his time for the full distance was 40sec.
Titter and High Peer were associated in h five-furlong flutter, the former being a head in front at the finish in lmin 6 4-ssec. The first two took 27 2-ssec. High Peer is to race at Marton, and it is understood he is then to b.; put aside until the spring. Quadroon and Bluffer were associated over six furlongs. They ran the first furlong in 14 l-ssec, three in 39 3-ssec, four in 53 4-ssec, and were going very smoothly at the finish in lmin 19 l-ssec. Quadroon was a shade in front. Segra could have improved upon the 41 2-ssec over three furlongs apd Barley Almond was clear of Merry Thought at the end of five run in lmin 7 2-ssec. Sporting Gift, after a slow beginning, moved smoothly throughout a threefurlong sprint which occupied 40 l-ssec. Selkirk, who did not do himself justice at Dannevirke, easily beat Tidewaiter over five furlongs which took lmin 6 3-ssec, the last two in 26sec. It was a nice effort on the part of Selkirk. Taumau drew clear of Warehi in their seven-furlong task and he was still going away at the finish, to complete the distance in lmin 36 l-ssec, the last three furlongs occupying 40 4-ssec. It was a very attractive performance on the part of Taumau.
Catalogue and Conveyer were sprinted an easy five furlongs and there was little between them at any stage. They averaged Msec to the furlong for the first three, but the pace was then increased and they came home the last two in 25 3-ssec to complete in lmin 7 3-ssec.
Royal Limond beat Manawatu over five furlongs, running the distance in a tick under lmin lOsec.
Aurora's Love and Sky Full were galloped a mile and, with the former making the early pace, they ran the first three furlongs in 42sec and five in lmin 10 2-ssec. Over the last bit Aurora's Love drew out to win by a couple of lengths, the time for the full distance being lmin 50 l-ssec.
Puroto and Entheos were companions in a similar task. Puroto was away first, but she was steadied and they were together turning into the back. The first three furlongs took 41 3-ssec and five lmin 9 4-ssec, and they were still on terms at the finish, the full distance taking lmin 50 3-ssec. All Blood sprinted a couple of furlongs in 26£ sec.
The Peach Brandy—Elvaette gelding was put over a pony hurdle prior to jumping three hurdles. He accomplished his task nicely. Pango and Tail Light were partners in a round over the schooling fences, both jumping brilliantly. MARTON ENGAGEMENTS. The following riding engagements have been announced for Marton:—J.
