RATES INCREASED

UPPER HUTT BOROUGH

An- increase in the rates of 1 3-8 d in the £ unimproved value would have to be made this financial year, said the Mayor (Mr. P. Robertson) today, after a meeting of the Upper Hutt Borough Council in committee last evening to finalise the estimates. Full details of the estimates, he said would be given tomorrow evening. The reasons for the increased rates were the higher cost of essential borough services, the increased hospital levy, and the addition of interest and sinking of new loans. MASTERTON BOROUGH (By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.") MASTERTON. This Day. Referring to the rates struck for the Masterton Borough for the coming year, the Mayor, Mr. T. Jordan, said that these showed an increase of about | 5 per cent. The general rate remained the same as last year, but there were slight increases in the library, hospital, street lighting, and gas rates. The estimates provided for an expenditure of £1515 on new tar sealing and kerbing and £3875 on the reconditioning of tar-sealed streets.
