NORDIC RELIGION
m INSPIRED FROM ABOVE PROCLAMATION BY NAZI JEW-BAITER MOUNTAIN CEREMONY United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received June 28, 9 a.m.) MUNICH, June 27. One hundred thousand Nazis ascended the Hesselberg ("Sacred Mountain") to witness Herr Julius Streicher, the leader of the anti-Jew campaign, light a giant bonfire to proclaim the "Nordic religion." Streicher declared that God accompanied Germany thousands of years before the churches existed. Germans in future would climb the "holy mountain" instead of going to church when they felt the need of worship.
If foreigners of good Nordic blood also ascended the mountain they would be purified and enabled to understand the power which was inspiring Germany.
BANNED BY HIMMLER ALL CATHOLIC STUDENT ORGANISATIONS (Received June 28," 9 a.m.) BERLIN, June 27. Herr Himmler, leader of the Guard Troops, has dissolved all Roman Catholic student organisations. A DENIAL GIVEN DISCONTENT IN AUSTRIA (Received June 28, 10.10 a.m.) BERLIN, June 27. Discontent in Austria is semi-offi-cially denied. lonia. Meanwhile they are consolidating their positions in General Franco's territory, the Germans far more so than the Italians. The Germans, indeed, although inferior to the Italians in numbers, are a hundred times as formidable. EXTENT OF CONTROL. Italian and German specialists are strengthening all their political, economic, and military key positions in General Franco's territory. They are in control of his whole: military machine, including even his reserve formations. They have built numerous military airports. They have brought all the repair shops and all the reserve material needed for aerial warfare to the highest point of technical perfection. The rebels now have no difficulty in repairing the damaged aeroplanes. For the loyalists all but minor repairs are slow and difficult, if not impossible. Two or three months ago the German and Italian aeroplanes serving under General Franco numbered 700, whereas the Government had only 90. It is true that since then the Government has received aeroplanes from abroad, but the superiority of the rebels in the air is still enormous. It is also true that the Italians have recalled some of their infantry, but they have not weakened General Franco in the least by doing so. The Italian infantrymen in Spain have turned out to be far inferior to the Spanish infantry, whether rebel or loyalist. INSURGENT FORCES. The new Falangist columns are proving to be excellent soldiers who fight with great discipline and determination. The Germans would call them "political soldiers," and their fighting value, reinforced as it is by a strong conviction, far exceeds that of the unwilling Italian levies. Indeed, it is probably an advantage to General Franco to be without Italian infantry, although he cannot do without Italian aeroplanes, artillery, tanks, and Italian experts. The Moors also are excellent soldiers. They too are being converted in a political sense by the Germans and Italians. They are being told that the Moorish world will be established anew and that when the war is over Cordova will be a Moorish capital once again. These promises have made a deep impression on the Moorish officers, who are now fighting for a cause they genuinely believe their own. To them the ancient war of the Crescent against the Cross has been resumed. FORMIDABLE SECRET SERVICE. The Germans and Italians have established a formidable secret service. It is most elaborate in the region of Catalonia that has been conquered. German agents have succeeded in entering the regions still held by the" Spanish Government. Some stay for only a short time and carry out wrecking activities. Others have established themselves in the political, economic, and military organisations of the Government. The German General Staff and Gestapo (secret police) co-operate harmoniously in Spain. At the moment they are trying to form a new revolutionary "freedom party" on Government territory. The German agents in Spain number about 7000. The Italian agents, as distinct from troops, are fewer, though they must number several thousands. The work that is being done by Germany and Italy, above all toy Germany, leaves no doubt that both Powers mean to estat/ish themselves permanently in Spain. It is not work for the duration of the war. The victory of General Franco is only its initial purpose; its ultimate purpose is to place all Spain under German and Italian control.
