"HAPPY VALLEY"
: A CITY'S SPORTS ; CENTRE b BOON TO SOUTHAMPTON i (From "The Post's" Representative.) I LONDON, June 1. " During a weekend visit to the New 'Forest as the guests of Mr. Lionel de •Rothschild, the Duke and Duchess of -Kent spent three hours in Southampton. During 'hat time the Duke opened Uhe town's new 269-acre sports centre "which cost £151,000, opened the new "radium and deep X-ray cancer wards •at the Eoyal South Hants and Southhampton Hospital, and inaugurated the •hospital's centenary appeal for 100,000. "" The sports centre is known as Southampton's "Happy Valley." It is actually a valley over a mile long and more than half a mile in width, enclosed within an oval frame of woods. In laying it out the Corporation has carefully preserved the scenic beauty. There is a golf course, cricket and football pitches, a cycling track, bowling greens, tennis courts, canoe lake, and paddling pool, and tea pavilions, and there are even paths for ramblers through the woods. Five years ago the area was only ill-drained farm land. The Duke of Kent said that he had been much impressed by the excellence of the lay-out. He congratulated all concerned with the scheme for their foresight in providing so large a selfcontained area. Alderman P. Woolley, chairman of the committee of management, said that the hospital had been in existence for 100 years, its foundation being mainly due to Masonic initiative. The new department was recognised by the British Empire Cancer Campaign as a research centre, and would serve three counties as well as the Isle of Wight. They required £10,000 to complete the deep X-ray and cancer wards, £14,000 to complete the rebuilding scheme, £20,000 for two new wards, £20,000 for additional operating theatres, and £36,000 for a new nurses' home. Mr. H. J. Nightingale said one objective which they had in view was to give their nurses a 48-hour week, r*and they wanted to be among the pioneers in trying to give the hospital nurse a new charter. 1
