BODY ON BEACH

PETONE FIRE OFFICIAL

The body of the deputy superintendent of the Petone Fire Brigade, Mr. Albert Samuel Burrows, was found at Lyall Bay, close to the sea-wall at I;h'e western end. of the beach, at about 10.30 a.m. yesterday. Mr. Burrows, who lived at the fire station with his wife and two sons, left on Saturday afternoon to go to a football match in Wellington. When he did not return at the expected time the brigade superintendent, Mr. J. P. Gaynor, organised, a search. Mr. Burrows was Hot found, but it was discovered that lie had travelled to Wellington, by bus and had been seen in the city at about 4' p.m. The search was continued yesterday morning. The body was found by a resident of Lyall Bay. It had'apparently been lying on the beach overnight and had teen noticed earlier in the morning by a number of people who took it to be someone lying on the beach enjoying the sunshine. Mr. Burrows, who was not in good health, was to have left with Mrs. Burrows on a holiday visit to Auckland tonight. Joining the auxiliary staff of the brigade in 1916, when he was employed at'the Hutt' Railway Workshops, Mr. Burrows was station officer for -ten years. He joined the permanent stall of the brigade in 1926 and was appointed deputy superintendent in 1934.

'He will be given a full fireman's funeral tomorrow. Mr. Burrows, who was 52 years of age, was as a young man prominent in gymnasium work in the Y.M.C.A. He took a keen interest in the competition work of the Petone Fire Brigade and coached the team that won the New Zealand championship last year. A service will be held at the Petone Fire Station at 2 p.m. tomorrow. The interment will take place at Taita Cemetery.
