OBITUARY
MR. R. E. BECKETT (By Telegraph—Press Association.) MARTON, June 26. The death has occurred of Mr. R. E. Beckett, aged 83. He was prominently associated with the affairs of Marton and district for 63 years. - Born in London and educated at London University School, Mr. Beckett arrived 'in the Dominion in 1878. He started business at Marton in 1875 as an auctioneer and general merchant, and was finally absorbed by Abraham and Williams, of which firm he was a dire.ctor. Mr. Beckett was keenly interested in local body affairs. He was a county councillor from 1892 till 1907, for two years as chairman, and was Mayor of' Marton for three periods between 1881 and 1913. A keen patron of sport, he was one of the original guarantors of the Rangitikei Hunt Club .and Marton Jockey Club, and had filled the offices of chairman, president, and life member of the latter for the past 30 years. • As a young man he was a keen cricketer and athlete, and a member of the original clubs at Marton.
He leaves four daughters and one son.
