BEATEN AGAIN

N.Z. LEAGUE TEAM

COLLAPSE IN SECOND SPELL

BRISBANE, June 25,

After leading 12-5 in the first half, during which the Kiwi backs were brilliant and more impressive than last Saturday, the New Zealanders tired in the second half of the return Rugby League match against Queensland and their tackling fell away. The final score was: Queensland 21, Kiwis 12.

A much smaller crowd of 6000 saw the game. The weather was sunny and warm.

The Kiwis were a different team today, when, aided by an interpretation of the "play-the-ball" rule to which they had been accustomed, they kept the game open and their display in the early stages was that of an international team. Brown, who at times was brilliant on the wing, scored a good try, but Smith, full-back, eclipsed all the other scoring efforts with a tricky dance through the defence after fielding a punt to midfield. He tackled like a demon all day and held his own with Whittle, the Kangaroo full-back. Kay and Hemi played excellent football, while Tittleton carried out the job of holding Reardon most effectively. The Queenslander was unable, except once, to break through dangerously. When he did, a try resulted for Queensland. Orman broke practically even in the scrums, but in the first half the Kiwis were penalised on three occasions to one for breaches, which were mostly for offside play. Had Queensland had Hemi as kicker the errors would have been costly for New Zealand. The scorers were: Brown and Smith (tries) and Hemi (two goals and one penalty from near half-way). Queensland: Cooper (2), Reardon, Ryrie, and Collins (1), and Gilbert (two goals and one penalty). "The tour has been an education to us," said the Kiwis' manager, Mr. Redwood. "It will mean a better standard of play when the knowledge we have gained is handed on to our players at home."
