ENCOURAGEMENT NEEDED

Keen appreciation of the courtesy shown by General Duigan and his officers to the business community was expressed by Mr. Pattrick this morning. Those who had had an opportunity to see what was being done were satisfied that the Defence Department was doing everything possible and that the assistance of citizens generally could help.

First of all, said Mr. Pattrick, the visitors had been struck by the need for improvements at Trentham. The streets in the camp were badly in need of repair and it should be part of the Public Works roading programme to put them in good order. Good roads and better accommodation would have a decided influence on the trainees. The young men in camp were taught to do things efficiently and thoroughly and the improvements suggested would have an influence on their outlook.

General Duigan and his staff were to be congratulated on the work that was being done, said Mr. Pattrick. If one thing was obvious* to the visitors it was that a comprehensive and intense organisation was being built up to form an adequate framework for the defence system. The ramifications of the Department were many and varied and the work being done indicated keenness and versatility.

All members of the party were grateful to General Duigan and his officers for the opportunity to see what was being done, Mr. Pattrick said, and he hoped that, the business community would help the defence authorities to see that an adequate defence system was built up and maintained.
