"MOST SERIOUS SITUATION"
ARMY & NAVY SERVICE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received June 25, 10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, June 24. President Roosevelt declared that the army and the navy should have additional funds with which to combat espionage in the United States. He said.that the intelligence branches of both services had insufficient money to cope -with what he termed a most serious situation. Asked whether the desire for additional funds constituted counterespionage, Mr. Roosevelt replied that the running down of spies in America was his version of counter-espionage. Without mentioning his name, Mr. Roosevelt also condemned the action of the former Government employee who, after unearthing spy information, resigned his position in order to write newspaper articles.
