GRAND NATIONAL MEETING (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, June 24. ■ The Canterbury Jockey Club received nominations today for the six principal events to be decided at the New Zealand Grand National Steeplechase Meeting in August. The total reached 222, as against 219 last year, details being as follows, with last /year's figures m parentheses:— Grand National Steeplechase, 31 (32); Winter Cup, 52 (56); Beaufort Steeplechase, 34 (36); Grand National Hurdles, 37 K29); Sydenham Hurdles, 32 (29); Lincoln Steeplechase, 36 (37). By winning the Birthday Cup in Adelaide a fortnight ago, the Manfred horse Navarino made Turf history, as he is the only double winner of the race. He was successful last year, when,he led practically all the way. He did the same this year, and won running away. He is one of the smartjest of Manfred's progeny, but it is I doubtful if he is near the class of The Trump. At a meeting of the committee of the S.A.J.C. last week, it was decided to call for applications for the positions of stipendiary stewards for the racing season 1938-39. This action has been taken in accordance with the decision of the commitee about twelve months ago to appoint stewards annually. It seems to be the accepted view in Australia now that a periodical change in the stipendiary board is all to the good of the sport.
