By winning the Birthday Cup in Adelaide a fortnight ago, the Manfred horse Navarino made Turf history, as he is the only double winner of the race. He was successful last year, when,he led practically all the way. He did the same this year, and won running away. He is one of the smartjest of Manfred's progeny, but it is I doubtful if he is near the class of The Trump. At a meeting of the committee of the S.A.J.C. last week, it was decided to call for applications for the positions of stipendiary stewards for the racing season 1938-39. This action has been taken in accordance with the decision of the commitee about twelve months ago to appoint stewards annually. It seems to be the accepted view in Australia now that a periodical change in the stipendiary board is all to the good of the sport.
