KIA ORA'S draw,
PROGRESS OF UNIVERSITY i (By "Ring.") •<, As was expected,, the Wellington East Old Girls-Kia Ora match last Saturday was very evenly contested, Kia Ora gaining the lead in the first half, only to have Wellington East overhaul it in the second. Both teams found the tricky wind unpleasant and difficult for accurate shooting. Kia f, Ora showed more decisive passing in s the first half, but after the interval, t, Wellington East pressed hard and e , completely dominated play for the first r ten minutes, when they reduced the t lead of 4 goals against them at the J end of the first spell. ' From then h on the score see-sawed, until shortly e before time East led 11-10. Quick passing then took the ball to the Kia Ora forwards, T. Weybourne scor- r ing just on time to make it a draw, a M. Paton and J. Williams were £ outstanding in Kia Ora defence, and tl ! J. King brilliant in centre. Wellmg'ton East's defence again proved a i thorn in the opposition forwards, who, £ | in the second half, took' too many long j ! shots at goal. E. Ruddell played again j 1 on Saturday, after being out for the t last few Saturdays because of an in- x jured knee. J. Norrie and M. Jenkins again combined well in East's for- i ward third, but: their usual accurate J shooting was apparently affected by c the wind. v University took one step nearer the championship by defeating Awatea, and at present look very likely challengers for the senior A championship. Although they won by only a ■ two-goal margin—lß-16—University i played a pretty open passing game, < their positional play usually giving J few chances for interception. Awatea i iound the superior height of the Uni- i versity team a big handicap, and their i smaller forwards did exceptionally well to score so heavily. This was i mainly due to their accuracy in shoot- j ing. J. Grainger and E. Overton again ~ kept their opposing defence busy try- i ing to intercept quick passing. j On Saturday morning, University j played their held-over game against j Dental Clinic, winning decisively by I 23 goals to f. Dental Clinic were leading from i Technical Old Girls by 8 goals to 4 3 when play was stopped on account j of the rain on Saturday afternoon. j As.many of the .games were incom- ( pleted or not played because of -the i weather, it will be necessary to com- , plete these sixth-round matches later in the season. r. ; NEW ZEALAND TEAM. ' On July 24 the twelve plnyers selected to represent New Zealand at the carnival which is to be held in Melbourne from August 15 to 22 inclusive, will assemble in Wellington for ten days' intensive coaching. The team will play each State team under Australian rules, and a Victorian team under New Zealand rules. Besides these games, it is probable that a New Zealand v. All-Australia game will also be played. This means that the team will require training in the two codes during their stay and it will be necessary to arrange for the extra six players required for practice from senior Wellington players who are able and willing to attend practices during that period. The Victorian Association has suggested that for the five days the team will be in Australia prior to the tournament, a country tour be arranged. This offer has been accepted, and these matches should be of very great benefit to, the team as a try-out for the carnival. According to the "Sporting Globe" the districts to be.visited are Geelong, Warrnambool, Colac, and Camperdown. The Victorian Association, with the task of selecting a 'State team to defend their title in the all-Australia carnival, and also nine players to learn the New Zealand game, is busy with trials/the selectors being Misses E. Hull, M. Beaumont, A. Henderson, E. Lott, and Mrs. M. McLean. In Victoria, A grade referees nominate players for trials as well, and already 24 have been nominated. The visit of the New Zealand team, the first to visit Australia from overseas, is exciting great interest. AWATEA'S NEW PLAYER. ' B. Gluestin, ex-Canterbury repre--1 sentative and a member of the team 1 selected to represent New Zealand in \ 1936, is now resident In Wellington, ; and has been registered as an emergency player for Awatea. She is a ' forward, and at the tournament at 1 Christchurch was the speediest and ! most accurate forward in the Canterbury team. Her inclusion in the Awa--1 tea side should brighten Awatea's • chances considerably.- '. • CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS. 1 SENIOR A. 1 P. W. D. 1. Pts. ■ Wgtn.
