DIET EXPERIMENTS

A CHANGE OF PLAN

SCHOOL OR ORPHANAGE?

The proposed nutritional experiments with children attending the schools were the subject of consideration at a meeting of the "Wellington Education Board today. A letter was received from the Smith Family stating that the initial experiments were now to be carried out in an orphanage. This change of plan was adversely commented upon by several members, who maintained that the experiments would be of more value if carried out ■ with children in State schools, coming from a variety of homes. The board, . it-was.-stated, had promised co-opera-tion with the Smith Family on the understanding that the experiments were to be made in the State schools, arid-now, without any consultation, th'etie had been a change of plan.

After considerable discussion had taken place as to the relative merits of such nutritional and dental experiments in an orphanage, where children were under a standardised nutritional regime the whole time, or in the State schools where children were drawn from varying surroundings, a motion was passed regretting the change of attitude and expressing the opinion that the experiments would be of more value if conducted in the State schools.
