United Tress Association—By Electric Tele- | graph—Copyright. (Received June 21, 11 a.m.) LONDON, June 20. The second day's play in the cricket match between Australia and Lancashire at Manchester ended with the tourists holding a slight lead on the first innings. Australia's first innings was taken from 262 for five wickets to 303 and Lancashire replied with 289. The weather was cool and dull when the match was resumed. Hassett (118) and Barnett (2) continued their partnership. Phillipson, bowling with a fine pace, got Barnett in the third over. Waite was shaky against both Phillipson and Nutter, and Hassett was half an hour without scoring. He was finally clean-bowled by a vicious offbreak without adding to his score. His innings lasted four hours and included thirteen 4's.
Waite was out in Wilkinson's first over, the ball turning slightly from leg. White hung on with remarkable solidity against excellent bowling. Fleet-
wood-Smith was unable to bat owing to a dental operation oyer the weekend. McCormick never looked capable of staying. The innings ended in 325 minutes at 12.40 p.m.
McCormick and Waite opened the attack against Lancashire. Waite yorked Washbrook in his first over and, a little later, got Paynter legbefore. Lancashire's score was then 19 for two, 10 more runs being added before lunch.
Iddon and Oldfield then made a stand which realised 107 runs. Oldfield, the most stylish batsman playing for Lancashire, pulled and cut delightfully, while Iddon payed with unhurried comfort. The hundred was raised in 95 minutes, the second 50 having taken only 30 minutes.
Chipperfield was called to-the crease for the first time for a month to vary the attack, which seemed in danger of being collared. McCormick, who had earlier bowled with imposing speed, was recalled with the score at 126 and got Iddon with his first ball, and Oldfield two overs later. Both spooned the ball to silly mid-on. Oldfield batted.for 105 minutes and hit ten 4*s.
McCormick took a brilliant left-hand catch off his own bowling to dismiss Nutter. Lancashire, with seven wickets down for 169, was again in a poor position but Phillipson and Farrimond added 71 runs for the eighth wicket in a courageous stand. The county was out after the innings .had lasted 275 minutes, having made a surprising recovery. Details:— AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
