SCALE-TESTING CHARGES
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—l am a small shopkeeper and have to have my scales tested yearly. I am charged about 2s 6d per set for testing, but on top of this I am charged 10s travelling expenses. My neighbours next door are also charged the same. As the same two men do all this in less than one hour it works out at 30s travelling expenses besides about 15s inspection lees. If this is not an excessive charge I should like to know what is.—l am, etc., SUBURBAN SHOPKEEPER. [On inquiry "The Post" was informed that since January 10, 1927, the regulations of the Labour Department have provided that where self-indicat-ing scales recording 101b and under are inspected (as they have to be every year) the charge is 2s 6d each if the scales are deposited at the office of the inspector, but if the- scales are tested at the request of the owner outside the office of the inspector the minimum charge is 10s, in addition to which the owner may have to pay cartage of apparatus and the travelling expenses of the officer. Inspection at the office is charged on a lower scale as it saves time in the compulsory examination of all scales of the district, and the necessary facilities are available there.]
