SCENIC HIGHWAY
(To the Editor.) Sir,—May I add my support to the suggestion by "Motorist" that an elevated drive be formed from Melrose North southwards. The suggestion is certainly an excellent one and deserving of the support of all those who wish to see our, Exhibition a success. "Motorist" and "P. Destrian" have confined themselves purely to the worth of the drive in the light of the Exhibition. There are other aspects which should be mentioned. Such a drive would Remain of lasting value to the city,; as it is not a dead end, but would-serve to open up a large district at present in its developmental stage. Were the council to embark op this project the drive should pay for itself.. I understand that this district, Melrose North and South, has all services 'such as lighting, gas, water, and sevjerage. With the construction of the,.'drive the council should encourage the subdivision of lt*ge blocks of laiyl into residential allotments. The total/'rating would be increased enormously to the definite financial gain of/the city. /Opportunity would then present itself for the Housing Department to build homes; taking advantage of the large blocks of land available. The /Beautifying Society could, with the (assistance of unemployed labour, direct iits activities towards the Town Belt 'and surrounding suburbs needing attention. Should the Exhibition Committee not have considered this important aspect of its large scheme it should undoubtedly make representation to those concerned in an endeavour to have carried out some such programme as that outlined above.— I am, etc., ANOTHER MOTORIST.
