PROMISING TRIO

LEIGHON'S FIRST CROP

Among several stallions who will be represented on the racecourse for the first time next season is the Gainsborough -horse Leighon. Seven foals resulted from Leighon's first light season at The Curragh Stud, but as the result of an unfortunate series of mishaps they have been reduced to three, Leighon Rei, Miss Leighon, and Saxon Tor, all of whom will be raced next season by their breeders. For the following season Leighon's representation will be much greater, as he was given more mares in his second seasoa at the stud and produced fifteen foals.

Leighon Rei (Leighon—Lady Pym) is being trained by M. Williams at Otaki for Leighon's owner, Mr. J. J. McGrath. This filly gives indications of coming early, and present intentions are to start her in the season's first two-year-old race, the Debutant Stakes at Wanganui.. AH of Lady Pym's previous foals to race bave been winners, one of them, First Consul, being one of the best weight-for-age horses in Wesb» em Australia.

Miss Leighon (Leighon—Rule Britannia) is being trained for Mr. H. J. D. McManaway by L. J.. Jarvis at Marton. Mr, McManaway also has three foals by Leighon, colts from Wyndala and Rule Britannia and a filly from Habit.

The only Leighon colt whose dam is Saxony, a full-sister to Clarion Call, has just been put into serious training. He is owned by Mr. George Wells, ot Feilding.

As each of these rising two-year-olds shows considerable promise and has been nominated freely in the classic and other future events for which, entries closed recently, Leighon's progeny, though small in numbers, may easily prove equal to representing him worthily during the coming season.

At the annual meeting of the Wai» pawa Racing Club last week, the pre* sident, Mr. W. A. Tod, in the chair, it was resolvedj after a. great deal of discussion, that a special meeting be called to consider a proposal to wind up the club, or alternatively, to amal-. gamate with the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club.
