VERY HEAVY TRACKS
TRENTHAM NOTES
ADDITIONS TO STABLES
(By "Rangatira.")
Trentham trainers have been much handicapped by the weather during the past fortnight, and again this morning there was steady rain throughout the working hours and very sloppy going. Very little serious work of any description was attempted, though the trial grass was available. The only piece of schooling was done by Southern Blood (B. Sullivan), Monteloo (D. Gordon), and Laggard (J. McCauley), who jumped six hurdles. Southern Blood fenced excellently, and so did Monteloo, who now. goes straight at his fences. Laggard was content to follow the other pair, but for a novice he also performed well. All three horses handled the bad ground without trouble. Southern Blood is still sore before working, but he seems all right when warmed up. During last week Red Sun and Sunee both schooled extra well, and Lustral and Jewish Lad also gave pleasing exhibitions. Jewish Lad has filled out a lot lately and he is now a much more solid type of horse than he was.
These, horses were worked on the flat this morning. Red Sun (L. T. Nesbitt) ran a mile in lmin 55sec, and Jewish Lad (R. Hawes) did a round of strong pacing.
Arctic King (S. Wilson), who looks none the worse despite his recent failures, did a couple of rounds with sprints down the straight, taking 43£ sec the final time. He will be S. Wilson's mount in the Whyte Handicap.
Sunder- (A. Sagar) ran seven furlongs in lmin 40sec. Rockingham (T. Young) and Liane (Wilson) did three furlongs in 40Jsec. Diareus (R. A. Hawkings) took 56sec for half a mile. Sunbeam (Hawes) looked and moved very well in his pace work. Gay Hunting and Royal Highness were also sent on strong pacing tasks.
The friends of H. A. Telford will be pleased to hear that he has made a good recovery from his recent illness, and is now back home. However, he will be having a rest for some time from training, and his team is at present under the care of the stable head man, H. Clout. Sigurd and Accomplice were joined up with the active team again last week after spells, both appearing to have benefited from their holiday. A yearling full-brother to Sigurd is also being broken in.
Peerless is again a regular visitor to the tracks, but she is not yet undertaking serious tasks. She has grown a lot during her. vacation.
Additions to T. R. George's team are Daregain, a three-year-old chestnut full-sister to Darecourt, who will race in the same interests, and rising two-year-old fillies by Iliad from Countersign (hence a full-sister to Drachma) and by Irish Lancer from Flying Mist. The Irish Lancer filly, who has been named Morning Mist, will probably be sold at the sale during Trentham race week.
