STOWAWAYS FINED
PASSAGE ON KAIKORAI
Two young men who were returned to Wellington yesterday pn the Awatea after-stowing away on the Kaikorai on a voyage from Wellington to Newcastle appeared before Mr. A. M. Goulding, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court today. John Patrick Hardy, a steward, aged 27, and John McKenzie, a salesman, aged 30, pleaded guilty to a charge of stowing away.
Sub-Inspector J. A. Dempsey prosecuted. On June 9, said Sub-Inspector Dempsey, the Kaikorai left Wellington for Newcastle. After it had got out to sea the two men were discovered on board. Neither had paid his passage, and on arrival at Newcastle .the Customs. Department would not allow them to land. They were escorted from Newcastle to Sydney, and later. brought back to New Zealand by the Awatea.
Hardy had not previously, been before the Court, but McKenzie had several previous convictions. The cost to the "shipping compariy, exclusive of the cost of escort, lie said, amounted to £18 14s for each man.
Neither of the men had anything to say. . He,knew of no power to order payment' to the shipping company, said Mr. Goulding. - ■
Each of the accused was convicted and fined £10, in default three weeks' imprisonment.
