NARROW ESCAPE
EVEREST CLIMBERS
NEARLY CAUGHT BY AN AVALANCHE DRAGGED TO SAFETY United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. (Received June 20, 12.10 p.m.) LONDON, June 19. A copyright message received by "The Times" from its correspondent at Calcutta states that a letter received from Kalimpong from the Everest Expedition states that the leader, Mr. H. W. Tilman, three climbers, and four porters were nearly caught by an avalanche on the north col and were dragged to safety by means of ropes. The letter does not mention the intention of the party to return. It says that the monsoon seems to be established.
The party is reconnoitring a route on the west side in order to ascertain whether it is practicable to assault the summit under monsoon conditions.
