The flooded area now embraces a thousand square miles. Two thousand villages are totally and 1500 partly submerged. Out of 700,000 people who are threatened it is feared 100,000 are beyond rescue. Many are marooned and have only bark and roots for food. The Chinese spokesman for the Yellow River Conservancy Board expressed fears that the floods would inundate north-east Honan, north Kiangsu, and north Anhwei. He also pointed out the possibility of the Hwai River and the Yangtze breaking their banks as a result of the influx from the Yellow River. The Yangtze, owing to the continued rainfall, is approaching a record level. The authorities are strengthening the ~\kes in the neighbourhood of Hankow.
