(To the Editor.) Sir—ln the council discussion on borrowing or increasing the rates one member said the problem was a simple one "in view of the Government assistance." The Slate Advances is receiving the rent of a Karori property of which it is mortgagee, but it is not even paying the present rates. I am the second mortgagee, and have received a notice from the Wellington rate collector that the property will be sold (and my security destroyed) if I do not pay the rates. I have received nothing for the last four or five years, not even the 2 per cent, mentioned by Mr. Appleton. —I am, etc., TAKAKA.
