TOP MEN IN FORM

HORNE AND EWEN DEFEATED

; Miramar's scratch players, M. R. Moore arid H. A. Black, led their team finely during the inter-club match between Hutt and Miramar on Saturday. Moore; No. 1 for his side, defeated W. G. Home, provincial champion, by 4 and 2, and Black I. A. Ewen by 4 arid 3. To make amends for the defeais, G. P.. Roberts, Hutt's third scratch man, scored heavily oyer J. H. Drake, whose form was affected by (the bleak northerly blowing across the course. vj ' Moore was out m 37 m his match with Home, and he stood 2 up then. A string of ,3's at the fourth, fifth, and sixth, the second a birdie, was handy and when Home went astray at the tenth, Moore's birdie 4 —secured with a brilliant approach within a footput, him' 3 ahead. He lost the fourteenth when Horne secured a birdie 4,i but a par 4 at the'next gave him the long lead again, and another 3 at the sixteenth, just as a heavy shower betan, gave • him victory. At the fifteenth Horne's tee shot finished in a bunker, and at the sixteenth his wood from the tee was hooked and hi* second flopped weakly into a bunker. < Moore's golf was consistently sound and he swung easily, m cold. Moreover, he was a deal in his putts than Horne. Hornes irons lacked crispness, and osmeofhis putting was poor. It was £ octin0ctin have form "though in it he would still have iound Moore pretty troublesome. Ewen was disturbed by the greens even more than Home. And though one or two of the greens were not as smooth as they might have been. Ewen could scarcely excuse hisputtmg oe cause of the surfaces. Timidity ot stroking was apparent in much of his play on the green, a condition pro J ably encouraged by the number of stymies iri the match. By contrast. Black's putting was always P ret W good and sometimes, particularly. on long approaches, first-class. He was hitting his shots with greater freedom than for some time. Ewen s play with his woods was the best feature of his came. A couple of drives, at . the eleventh and fourteenth in particular, were grand shots. Black was out in 37- to Ewen's 40. ~. _ . ■ I Roberts started by putting for 3 s on both the first and second. He did not get them; and his play on the tereens, where he seemed troubled by She run of the ball, was his weakness during the game. Everything .else was done in tip-top style, with long seconds, always well up to the pin, p. remarkably accurate feature of . his play. Out in 37, he was then b up, a handicap even one so steady as_ Drake ■found. too great. Drake, to do him justice, was. not at his best. Ana nothing he could do was sufficient td shake the confidence of a golfer as good as Roberts, especially with the run'of the ball in his favour. Other matches were as interesting as the top three. W. K. Cook had a stern battle with K. V. Jeffery, winning 1 up with, a round of 75 and having to hold ori grimly when Jeffery won the seventeenth from dormy 2 down. G. S. Rees was hitting the ball well, going .out in ?9 and standing 2 up at the turn. The other matches had their dramatic touches, especially D. S. Halley's victory over R. D. Chandler, which gave Mlrtoiar its Cup victofr. Conditions were scarcely favourable, for the wind was icy and. a couple of showers, one a .terror which caught most of the players in the last few holes, into their faces, affected tbeir grips, apd wert most uncomfortable. In spite of them .and in spite of the wind, the golf was entertaining and, frequently of high quality.
