AUSTRALIA V. ESSEX

WICKET HELPS BOWLERS

TWO FULL INNINGS ,\

United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, June 4. With wickets falling quickly on both sides there was an interesting day's cricket when the match between Australia and Essex was commenced at Southend today. Australia made 145 (Brown 55; Fames four for 43) and 0 for none, Essex replying, with 114 (Ward seven for 51). The match began in bright sunshine. | The teams are: | Australia.—S. J. McCabe (Captain), C. L. Badcock, A. G. Chipperfield, W. A. Brown, J. H. Fingletoli, L. O. B. Fleetwood-Smith, A. L. Hassett, C. Walker, E. S. White, M. Waite, F. Ward, and Barnett, twelfth man. Essex,—C. T. Ash ton (Captain), D. B. Wilcox, T. N. Pearce, K. Fames, T. N. Dennis, J. W. A. Stephenson, J. O'Connor, M. S. Nichols, L. C. Eastman, P. Smith, and T. H. Wade. McCabe won the toss and decided to I bat. Good bowling on a viciously-eccen-tric wicket gave the crowd a sensational day's cricket. Speed and spin bowlers were both helped by a wicket which, in addition to the early trickiness frequently found at English seaside grounds, had an inherent streak of nastiness for which the meteorological explanation was inadequate. BROWN'S DETERMINATION. Brown, although fortunate in the early stages, held the side together splendidly. He batted with quiet determination and looked safe until the arrival of the tail-enders, when he was obliged to relax his previous rigidity. Fames, encouraged at his early success, bowled with great verve and worried the batsmen. Brown, when his score was 7, was dropped off Nichols. McCabe lasted only ten minutes. He skied a ball which gave such a simple catch for Wilcox at third slip that he walked out before the catch was taken. Brown batted 2i hours before he hit his wicket. The side was all out in three hours. In Essex's innings Wilcox batted stubbornly for hours. He was almost exclusively on the defensive. Ward flighted the ball and cleverly deceived the batsmen. Fleetwood-Smith bowled confidently, but became careless after tea. Details:— AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
