NATIVE CLAIMS

DUTY OF STATE INTERESTS OF TAXPAYER A reminder of his assurance at Ngaruawahia last year that no major policy questions bearing on Native grievances and claims would be finally decided without first consulting the representatives of the race was given, by the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) in his address at the official opening of the Maori Labour Conference this afternoon. Mr. Savage referred to the conferences that had been held at Wellington early this year between representatives of the Natives and of the Government in respect of the several claims and grievances of the Maori race. A complete record had been taken of the representations made at the conferences and they were at present receiving the careful consideration of the Government. "You will appreciate," he said, "that the aggregate amount involved in the settlement of these age-old claims and grievances is very considerable, and for that reason it is essential that they should be viewed as a whole from the angle of the ability of the taxpayer of today to provide the funds for their satisfaction. The Government necessarily cannot overlook , this feature while at the same time giving full weight to the merits and justice of the claims of the Natives,"
