SACCONE FOR AUSTRALIA It is more than likely that the Surveyor gelding Saccone will make an early departure for Sydney, as his owner, Mr. A. E. Pearce, intends racing him in the Commonwealth in the spring, says an Auckland report. Saccone is a gelding with a reputation, and big things were expected of him as a three-year-old this season, but altogether his form was a little disappointing. He _ showed occasional glimpses of brilliance, and his failure can really be attributed to the fact that he was invariably slow from the barrier. He has made excellent prog?ess since he last raced and E. Pope has the gelding in flrst-class order for the trip. * . Mr. Pearce has been a good natron of racing in New Zealand, but his run of luck has not been the best. Commencing some years ago with a mare named Adi Vunivola, he has bred ex-

better compensation Owners of Victorian racecourses that were closed some years ago by order of the Government may expect better returns by way of compensation if a proposal "that the 5 per cent, totalisator percentage and broken moneyfromall compensation meetings, which at present are earmarked for charity, should be put to the credit of the fund is adopted by the Government, says a Melbourne exchange. When th 6 courses at Sandown Park, Richmond, and Fitzroy were closed m 1930 the Government decided that tne compensation should be a charge on racing, derived from nine compensation meetings each season in the metropolitan area. It was then thought that the receipts would have wiped out the debt by this .time, but many of the meetings were financial failures, and at times there was insufficient in the fund to pay interest. Payments up to date have been so small that the owners of the courses are despairing of ever receiving the compensation that was promised them.

FORM OF SMILIN' THRU One of the possibilities for the Hunt Club events at the Auckland Racing Club's Winter Meeting is the five-year-old Smilin' Thru, who has been several times placed, and was third to Neil and Lucidus in the Mangere Steeplechase at Ellerslie on April 16, Smilin' Thru is a bay mare by Te Monanui from Gold Beauty, by St. Amans from Shower Gold, by Marble Arch from Merry Nif, by Merry Hampton, and she appears to have inherited a good deal of the staying ability that is indicated by her pedigree, says an Auckland exchange. Although she may lack brilliance, she has demonstrated that she has prospects as a jumper, and the fact that she has been placed over the Ellerslie country will gain her many friends in the Hunt Club Cup.

L. G. MORRIS AS OWNER The Awapuni trainer L. G. Morris is at present handling a rising two-year-old by Defoe from the Arausio—Martulla mare Aratulla whom he will race, in partnership with Mr. L. H.
