GENERAL ELECTION

PARTY CANDIDATES

NOMINEES ENDORSED

The selection of candidates for the coming General Election is exercising the attention of party executives, and the lists are gradually filling up. Indeed, the regularity with which endorsements have been announced during the last month or so is much more striking than usual at this stage, and is an indication of the keen interest that has developed in national politics.

So far the official list of Labour candidates shows that 57 have already been endorsed, including the four Maori candidates. There are still ten sitting members who have not been endorsed by the National Executive, but these are expected to be endorsed in due course. Nominations have been called in eleven electorates. No steps have been taken by the Labour Party to invite nominations for the Nelson electorate, which is represented by Mr. H. Atmore (Ind.), and the party will not oppose Mr. D. McDougall (Ind.) in Mataura should he choose to stand again. Therefore, at least 78 seats will be contested by Labour. The National Party has endorsed candidates for 47 seats so far, and nominations for other seats are now being considered. The following are the official party candidates to date, the sitting members being indicated by an asterisk: — NORTH ISLAND. Bay of Islands.—W, Brown (Ind.), W. Grounds (Ind.). Kaipara.—Rt. Hon. J.
