TARDY MOTORISTS

RELICENSING OF CARS

(By Telegraph—Press CHRISTCHURCH, June 1.

Only a . few more than, half the people holding motor-driving licences issued by the Christchurch City Council last year have so far taken out licences for 1938-39. Licences issued today numbered 701, bringing the total to 8518 out of 16,005 issued last year, so approximately 7500 people lay themselves open to prosecution if they take cars out on the road tomorrow. The 8518 people who have taken out new licences were not all drivers last year. The number includes about 140 persons who qualified for licences: by tests during May. New motor licences taken out on May 31 were 1447, making the total 11,971. This total was greater by more than 1000 than the total at May 31 last year, which was 10,681.
