BARCELONA, May 31.

Heavy casualties were caused when insurgent bombs were dropped in the crowded market square at Granollers, 20 miles north-east of Barcelona.

Extensive damage was done. The entire ambulance resources of Barcelona have been rushed to Granollers.

The casualties are over 500 killed, mostly women and children. five planes dropped 40 bombs, on# exploding in a food queue. The town is "crowded with refugees.

All the ghastliness of the bombing of Guernica was reproduced in this market town with a single main street, in which 36 houses were wrecked and choked with debris, from which troops and" workmen, are digging out bodies.

The first bomb dug a huge hole in the busy market square and created a shambles among queues of customers. Another split a three-storey storeroom from top to bottom. After inflicting the maximum possible damage, the raiders machinegunned fleeing citizens and then sped to Majorca with 33 loyalist aeroplanes ineffectually pursuing them. The death-roll included many child* ren who were killed when a bomb struck a schojol. .
