USEFUL WIDENING

MAIN EXHIBITION ROUTE

The widening of Evans Bay Road will greatly improve access to the Exhibition and will, of course, be a permanent city improvement, but there will not be sufficient funds to continue the widening over the full length. There will remain a considerable section between the Patent Slip and Point Jerningham at its present width, and still without a footway. t An illustration in today s Post gives an idea of the type of work and the extent of the widening improvement just north of the bathing shelters. • At the foot of the seawall a ledge runs along for budding admirals to coma alongside in dinghies, when the tide is right, taking off other admirals and lasses to the Taurangas and Idle Alongs in the bay. The ledge will also be altogether suitable for youngsters to model yacht and occasionally to fall from. A,big quantity of spoil is required for the filling behind the wall, most of it coming from the Moa Point cutting or from city excavations. Just north of the public bathing shelters at the foot of Wellington Road a new bathing shelter is being' built for the local club. This will be available for the next season. AID TO TRAFFIC. The causeway road, cutting across the western bight of the bay from Wellington Road towards the Kilbirnie Post Office, is completed as far as rough formation goes and a start has been made with the building of the road formation. A substantial area of water has been enclosed, but this is being rapidly filled and will eventually be a useful addition to the Kilbirnie recreation ground. In the meantime it will not be opened for play, but will be used as a public parking space for cars during the Exhibition. The causeway road—it will have to be given some other name very soon, for it will cease to be a causeway when the reclamation is made behind it — will be of great value in enabling car traffic from the city via Oriental Bay and Evans Bay to be kept away from tram traffic in Kilbirnie Crescent. A short commencing length at the Kilbirnie end will lead traffic directly to Seatoun Road (which badly needs renaming, for it is neither in Seatoun nor leads to Seatoun) or to Onepu Road.

The Oriental Bay-Evans Bay route will be one of the main access ways to the Exhibition and the improvements in hand are altogether necessary, though their real value will be in their permanent benefit to traffic. It is a pity, however, that road widening and footpath construction cannot be continued the full length of Evans Bay Road.

For about twenty years a war hero has been drawing a pension from both the French and German Governments, his name appearing on the roll of honour of each country. The man, Jules Walter, fought on both sides in the war. He is of Alsatian origin, his father being German and his mother French.
