Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate north-westerly winds, freshening at times. Weather mainly fair to cloudy, j but occasional rain probable. Temperatures moderate to mild. The general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, Is for north-westerly to south-westerly winds prevailing. Winds will be moderate to fresh generally and strong at times in exposed places about and south of Cook Strait. The weather will be changeable, with rain at times in tpost districts, but in eastern areas falls will be mainly light and scattered. Temperature's' will be moderate to mild. On Saturday the depression which was approaching frotn the Tasman Sea gained in energy, and by the time it crossed the South Island on Sunday morning it was deep. It caused winds to freshen from the north-west, gale force being reached in places from Cook Strait southwards. • Winds by this morning, however, had turned to the west or south-west in many places, especially on the West Coast, and the westerly type of wedther now prevails. There are indications that several other depressions are due to pass before there is any general southerly change. In eastern districts between Canterbury and East Cape only scattered and mainly light rain has fallen, but in western districts and in the far north and south the rain has been fairly general. Greymouth has had a fall of 201 points. Jackson's Bay 159 points, and Arthur's Pass 155 point?. Rivers in Westland are at a high level. Temperatures have been mild. Auckland's weather during the weekend was rather unsettled. ''On Saturday it was cloudy with a few isolated light showers and with a light to moderate westerly wind. On Sunday a north-westerly wind freshened somewhat, the sky was cloudy, and in the afternoon heavy showers fell. At 9 a.m. today it was calm and overcast. Wellington had, an overcast sky .on Saturday, occasional drops of rain falling throughout most of the afternoon. About 4 p.m. there was a definite shower, and there were several others in the course of the evening. At 2 a.m. yesterday morning there was a very heavy shower, the total rainfall at Kelbum being 33 points. The wind on Saturday was north-westerly. This became strong during thS afternoon and in the night reached gale force. There were several very strong gusts,'one. at 5.5 a.m. reaching a velocity of 68 miles an hour at Kelburn. The wind on Sunday decreased in force and the weather improved, the afternoon being fine. It was again overcast this morning, and a fresh northerly was still blowing. The sunshine on Saturday totalled 2.1 hours and on Sunday 3.1 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures were 59.& arid 52.8 degrees on Saturday and 61.8 and 54.2 degrees, yesterday, ' Christchurch had dull and mild weather on Saturday, with light northeasterly breezes, and in the evening there was a light shower. Yesterday's weather was fair to cloudy with a warm north-westerly breeze. There , was a light frost early this morning, the weather at 9 a.m. being cloudy with a light breeze from-the west. Dunedin's weather on Saturday was dull with intermittent rain which became steady in the evening. The wind was a moderate north-westerly breeze. Yesterday's weather was fair, with passing cloud and sunshine, temperatures being mild and there bsing very little wind. It was main th-s morning, however, with a mnrW*" north-westerly breeze.
